Nykolas Lewis orchestrating the offense for Gonzaga.

Nykolas Lewis (Gonzaga, ‘25 PG)

          • Vs. The Potomac School: (W) 22 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl, 7/12 FG
          • Vs. Bulldogs: (W) 24 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, stl, 11/18 FG, 1/2 3pt, 0 TO
          • Vs. Tenley Tigers: (W) 21 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, 3/5 3pt

Nykolas Lewis doesn’t look like or play like a rising sophomore in high school. The Gonzaga point guard was the driving force behind their three wins in their third week of summer league. Lewis can play bully ball around the hoop and space the floor with his perimeter shot making.

David King (Hawks, ‘23 F)

David King adds to his high scoring total from the free throw line.

Vs. Saint Stephen’s Saint Agnes: (W) 27 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast, 10/16 FG, 2/3 3pt, 5/7 FT

  • Vs. Greenbelt: (W) 21 pts, 14 reb, 2 ast, stl, blk, 10/14 FG
  • Vs. Good Counsel: (W) 23 pts, 6 reb, 4 stl, 10/14 FG, 1/1 3pt
  • David King makes the game look easy. With a combined 71 points on only 44 field goal attempts, he has been as efficient as they come. The 6’2” forward can guard all positions, proving to be the ultimate mismatch.

Jackson Prince smacking the air out of the ball with an emphatic swat.

Jackson Prince (Wolverines, ‘23 G)

          • Vs. Georgetown Prep: (W) 19 pts, 10 reb, 3 ast, 3 blk, stl, 8/16 FG 3/6 3pt + Game winning putback layup to beat the buzzer
          • Vs. Takoma Academy: (L) 31 pts, 7 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, blk, 12/21 FG 1/3 3pt 6/7 FT
          • Vs. DeMatha: (L) 17 pts, 5 reb, 2 stl, 3/7 3pt
          • Vs. The Vikes: (L) 14 pts 8 reb

The Wolverines were tied with Georgetown Prep with just under five seconds to play. After their go-ahead three clanged off the rim Jackson Prince came parachuting in for the heroic tip in to beat the buzzer. Paired with a 31 point performance against Takoma Academy, Prince was the Wolverines most valuable player in week three.

Dante Mayo (Rockets, ‘24 G)

  • Vs. Good Fellas: (W) 29 pts, 9 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, 10/17 FG 7/12 3pt
  • Vs. The Hawks: (W) 18 pts, 3 reb, 5 stl, 5/11 3pt
  • Vs. The Cavaliers: (L) 16 pts, 13 reb, 2 stl,

Watching Dante Mayo light up the night last Monday with seven threes was the best 3 point shooting display we have seen so far this summer. Unlike a lot of high school ball players, Mayo doesn’t let his jumper dictate his game. Whether he’s shooting a prolific 7/12 from deep or struggling to find his stroke, Mayo doesn’t get down on himself and looks to impact the game in other ways.

No one was stopping Connor Venable this past week.

Connor Venable (The Heights, ‘23 G)

              • Vs. St. Mary’s Annapolis: (W) 37 pts, 10 reb, 2 ast, blk, 13-24 FG, 5/12 3pt, 6/8 FT
              • Vs. Fairfax Christian: (L) 30 pts, 12 reb, 3 stl, 11/22 FG, 5/12 3pt
              • Vs. The Brook: (L) 19 pts, 15 reb, 3 stl, blk

Lord, have MERCY! Someone needs to check and make sure Mr.Venable hasn’t overheated. The summer heat has arrived in Hyattsville, MD, but Connor Venable has been hotter. With two 30 point double-doubles this past week The Heights’ guard was stunting on all his opponents, while this Capitol Hoops writer just sat back with some popcorn and enjoyed the show.

Marvin Brimage fights for position against G’Town Prep.

Marvin Brimage (Tenley Tigers, ‘23 G)

  • Vs. McNamara: (W) 21 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast, 2/8 3pt 3/4 FT
  • Vs. Gonzaga: (L) 26 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast, stl, 11/18 FG 2/8 3pt 3/4 FT

Despite only playing two games in week three, the Tenley Tigers’ guard made his mark. Brimage hits shots off the catch and off the dribble no matter where he is on the court. At 6’3”, Marvin Brimage has a great sense of where he needs to be on the court, and gets his teammates open with his off ball movement. Looking forward to see what he has in store for the rest of the summer.

Wesley Williams attacking the basket against fellow honoree, Nykolas Lewis.

Wesley Williams (Fairfax Christian, ‘24 PG)

          • Vs. The Brook: (W) 17 pts, 6 ast, 8 stl, 7/10 FG, 2/3 3pt
          • Vs. The Trojans: (W) 19 pts, 3 ast, 3 stl, 8/12 FG, 3/5 3pt
          • Vs. The Heights: (W) 16 pts, 1 reb, 3 ast, 3/6 3pt, 3/4 FT
          • Vs. Cavaliers: (W) 15 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl, 5/9 FG, 2/4 3pt, 3/4 FT

Behind the consistency of Wesley Williams, Fairfax Christian has continued to be one of the hottest teams in summer league. The point guard is never rushed, which allows him to easily run the team’s offense. Paired with other good scoring options and an athletic big man Williams lets the game come to him, and lets the wins speak for themselves.

The league’s leading scorer, Tyler Perkins

Tyler Perkins (Landon, ‘23 G)

  • Vs. DeMatha: (L) 23 pts, 6 reb, 4 ast, 2 blk
  • Vs. The Brandywine Boyz: (W) 17 pts, 6 reb, 4 ast, 6 stl, 6/8 FG, 1/2 3pt, 4/4 FT

Tyler Perkins is one of the best players in the league, and has guided the Bears to a 6-2 record so far. The rising senior shoots the ball well out of half court sets, and can be a one man fastbreak when he drives to the basket. He dealt with a lot of pressure against DeMatha, as he struggled from the 3pt line, but stayed posed as he dished out four assists with zero turnovers.

Greg Jones dancing around a screen to set up the pick n’ roll.

Greg Jones (Hawks, ‘23 G)

            • Vs. Bullis: (W) 23 pts, 6 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, blk, 10/18 FG
            • Vs. Greenbelt: (W) 11 pts, 13 reb, 6 ast, 4 stl, blk, 4/4 FT
            • Vs. Good Counsel: (W) 22 pts, 8 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl, 9/17 FG, 3/4 FT

Greg Jones continues to be a matchup nightmare. At 6’6”, he can score in a variety of ways, while also using his long arms and good positioning to disrupt passing lanes on defense. Jones plays hard and is a quick decision maker with the ball in his hands.

Caden Diggs (Bullis, ‘24 W)

  • Vs. McNamara: (W) 17 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, blk, 7/14 FG, 0 TO
  • Vs. Cavaliers: (W) 18 pts, 9 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk, 8/13 FG, 0 TO
  • Vs. Good Fellas: (W) 15 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast, stl, 6/9 FG, 3/4 FT

The First player in the gym on Thursday of last week was Caden Diggs. The 6’7” wing player has the ideal basketball build. Along with those long arms and legs is a high motor player that fits well in the system he’s in. Caden Diggs has an incredibly high ceiling and seems to have the work ethic to get him there.
