Getting to the free throw line contributed to Coleman’s Summer League success.

Gibraltar Coleman – Flint Hill 2023, Forward #24

  • Vs. Takoma Academy: (L) 41 pts, 10 reb, ast, stl, blk, 12-26 FG, 4-9 3pt, 13-16 FT

The Capitol Hoops staff will miss watching Gibraltar Coleman play in the playoffs next week. The spectacular scoring forward’s team just missed the cut off despite his heroic 41 point outburst against undefeated Takoma Academy. Coleman put on a show throughout the regular season, and ended his final game with the highest single game point total we have seen all summer. I’m looking forward to watching him play at the next level.

When his shot is falling, it seems impossible to stop Nykolas Lewis.

Nykolas Lewis – Gonzaga 2025, Guard #5

                • Vs. Eagles White: (W) 33 pts, 9 reb, 7 ast, 13-20 FG, 6-9 3pt, 0 TO

Watching Nykolas Lewis in person will leave you speechless. The Gonzaga standout was mesmerizing against Eagles White on Tuesday. With his three point shot falling, defenders might as well shake the young man’s hand, pack up their things and head home. Match those six threes with seven assists and zero turnovers, and you have possibly the best point guard in DC.

Tobi Raji – Greenbelt (Eleanor Roosevelt) 2023, Forward #33

  • Vs. Spalding: (L) 10 pts, 15 reb, ast, 2 blk

  • Vs. Cavaliers: (W) 14 pts, 10 reb, 2 ast, 5 stl

He’s back… One of the few true big men in Summer League this year has made his way back to the court after dislocating his shoulder a few games ago. The Greenbelt forward looks like he hasn’t missed a beat as he returned to his double double form this week. Raji plays with passion and energy that along with his excellent awareness of where to be on the court, make him a menace on the backboards. They don’t make rebounders like Tobi Raji anymore.

Khalil Williams scans the court for The Potomac School.

Khalil Williams – Potomac School 2023, Guard #2

  • Vs. Vikes: (W) 25 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast, stl, blk, 0 TO

  • Vs. Good Counsel: (W) 14 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 0 TO

  • Vs. Severn: (W) 24 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 2 blk, 10-18 FG, 4-9 3pt

Khalil Williams has the most confidence of any basketball player I’ve seen all summer. The 6’5” guard arrives at every game with a hot pink Nike backpack slung over his shoulder, that is just as flashy as his game. Williams is an athletic shot creator who only turned the ball over once in three games this week. Not only did The Potomac School’s primary ball handler take care of the ball, he took better shots which helped him find a rhythm on the court.

Grady Wolfe – St. Mary’s Annapolis 2023, Guard #13

  • Vs. McNamara: (W) 16 pts, 4 reb, 12 ast, 3 stl

The St. Mary’s Annapolis point guard finished fifth in the league in assists per game thanks to his unselfish play on Tuesday. The prolific passer set up teammates throughout the entire game, and was the conductor of their upset win over McNamara. 12 assists is the most we’ve seen in a single game this summer, and is a rare sight to see in high school or collegiate basketball. Grady Wolfe makes the players around him better, and doesn’t shy away from attacking the basket.

Jackson Prince is a versatile defensive presence.

Jackson Prince – Wolverines (Westlake) 2023, Guard #1

            • Vs. Rockets: (L) 25 pts, 16 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl

Jackson Prince was tasked with carrying a lot of the load for his Wolverines this summer. Whether it was taking his defender off the dribble, grabbing an offensive rebound to keep the possession alive, or plucking the ball away for a timely steal, Prince did it all in the Wolverines final game of the summer.

The future is bright for Chris Henderson.

Chris Henderson – Good Fellas (Oxon Hill) 2024, Guard #11

  • Vs. The Brook: (L) 28 pts, 9 reb, 2 ast, stl, 11-20 FG, 1-2 3pt

The Summer League didn’t go the way the Good Fellas wanted it to, but that didn’t keep Chris Henderson from competing. In his final game, Henderson gave viewers a preview of what is to come. The guard had his best game of the summer, and refused to let up until the final buzzer went off. Henderson is setting himself up for a strong junior year.

Dante Mayo beats everyone to bucket.

Dante Mayo – Rockets (Richard Montgomery) 2024, Guard #3

                • Vs. Tenley Tigers: (L) 30 pts, 4 reb, stl, 9-20 FG, 8-18 3pt, 4-4 FT
                • Vs. Wolverines: (W) 24 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, 6-15 3pt, 6-6 FT

The shots continued to fall for Dante Mayo in the final week of the regular season. The Rockets’ workhorse can hunt for his shot off the dribble and the catch, while never appearing fatigued. Much like a wind up toy, whenever Mayo splashes a three or knocks down a couple free throws he seems recharged and wound up full of energy again.

Dorian Credle cashing a three with a hand in his face.

Dorian Credle – Takoma Academy 2023, Guard #10

  • Vs. Flint Hill: (W) 26 pts, 2 ast, 2 stl, 11-18 FG, 3-6 3pt

  • Vs. Vikes: (W) 9 pts, 6 reb, 6 ast, 1-3 3pt

  • Vs. Patriot: (W) 14 pts, reb, 6 ast, stl, 5-10 FG, 2-4 3pt

Credle shouldn’t be allowed to wear sports goggles anymore. The point guard’s vision has been too good, as the maestro has been diming up teammates all summer. Credle is a big reason why Takoma Academy finished undefeated. And was one of the only players to be top five in assists throughout the entire regular season.

Kris Mickens rocking the rim.

Kris Mickens – Fairfax Christian 2023, Guard #15

                  • Vs. DeMatha: (L) 18 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, blk, 7-12 FG, 1-3 3pt, 3-4 FT

Kris Mickens put together quite the performance this week against undefeated DeMatha. While filling up the stat sheet is easy to analyze on paper, the five charges he took are not. Mickens has proven to be a physical guard with a nice jumpshot who can jump out the gym. But his defensive performance this week rounded out his player portfolio. Mickens is the perfect team sport athlete as he has a strong ability to analyze what his team needs from him each game. This week it was moving his feet on defense and getting in the proper position to take charges and force steals. I am looking forward to seeing what role Kris Mickens takes on in the playoffs next week.
