Skinny jeans. Playboi Carti. NBA 2K. On the court, Oxon Hills’ Ronald Polite is one of the top performers during this years Capitol Hoops Summer League, but it’s his easy going and likeable personality off the court that makes him special.
“I’m really cool, I just like chilling with my friends”, the 6’2” guard said after scoring 31 points in an overtime win against Georgetown Prep on Friday night. Polite, who is averaging 28 PPG this summer, says when he’s not training for basketball, he enjoys listening to music, playing video games, and of course, rocking skinny jeans.
“They look good on me” Polite said, “I’m a skinny dude, so they fit me.”
Skinny jeans, a pair of Jordan 1’s, and an Armani hoodie is Polite’s go-to outfit when he’s hanging out outside of the basketball court, but his style on the court continues to stand out, most noticeably the pair of Kyrie Confetti’s he wore for his game on Friday night. “That was my first game wearing them but I definitely plan on wearing them again” he said about the flashy and multi-colored shoes.
Polite, whose unselfishness and intelligence separates him amongst the sea of talent, notes Lonzo Ball and D'angelo Russell as the two players he models his game after. “I just like how he plays. He’s unselfish, he sets players up, and can shoot a little bit” Polite said when talking about Lonzo Ball. “I’m not really a fan of his dad though.”
Through his first five games, Polite has put up over 30 points three times, and currently leads the league in scoring, field goals made, and total points. Even with his remarkable numbers this summer, he still feels like there’s work to be done. “My main goal this offseason is to get stronger. I try to go to the weight room every off day we have.”
He’s already received offers from George Mason and James Madison, but Ronald is keeping his options open on where he’s playing basketball in college.
“I’ve received interest from a lot of other schools, including Cornell and couple other Ivy League programs.” Despite the academic challenge of being accepted into an Ivy League, Polite says that his grades are strong and his test scores are high.
Ronald is an avid hip hop fan, and says without hesitation that Playboi Carti is his favorite artist. “I love the way he raps, his charisma. He’s a superstar.” Polite wants to bring Playboi Carti’s superstar mentality to the court, and says that his will to win games is the driving force behind his success this summer. “I’m going out there and trying to win no matter what. It doesn’t matter who we play, I want to lead my team.”
Polite loves to play video games in his free time, and says that NBA 2K is his go-to when hanging out with his friends. Even though the court is virtual, Polite still has the competitive edge when he plays 2K against his teammates.
“I’ll take any 2K smoke. No one can beat me.”
As a rising senior, Ronald Polite’s high basketball IQ and ability to score are two of the reasons why he is considered one of the area’s most sought after prospects. Oxon Hill sits at 3-3 in the Capitol Hoops Summer League, but proves to be one of the most talented among the 34 teams. Be sure to follow Ronald Polite and Oxon Hill as they continue their push to take over this summer.
