Recap

By Eric Brilliant

After more than a week off, Landon showed no signs of rust, defeating Greenbelt 66-58.

Greenbelt came out firing, opening the game with an 8-0 run. Kaleb Moore (‘24, F) and Gio Sanford (‘25, G) led the way for Greenbelt, scoring nine and seven points respectively. Moore and Sanford did most of their work down low, exposing Landon inside.

Landon was able to settle down and find their stroke from behind the arc, hitting 4-of-8 from three. Cooper Gleason (‘24, G) gave Landon their first lead on a three pointer from the wing. Joseph Coleman (‘24, G)  followed with an and-1, extending Landon’s lead. Landon began speeding up Greenbelts guards, allowing Landon to get out in transition.

Jermaine Drakes (‘25, G) had a pair of buckets at the end of the first half, giving Landon a 34-32 halftime lead. Landon carried their momentum into the second half with an 8-0 run of their own, led by Ubie Zaid (‘26, G). Zaid knocked down a couple free throws and had a nice steal to set up Ari Hobson (‘24, G) for an easy layup.

Daevon Walker (‘24, G) responded with a pair of tough mid-range jump shots for Greenbelt, stopping Landon’s run. Walker was a lot more aggressive in the second half and was able to get by his defender and set up his teammates with easy looks. Gio Sanford also continued to get downhill and kept looking for his shot, finishing the game with 16 points.

Despite Walker and Sanford’s efforts, Landon took a 15-point lead midway through the second. Greenbelt couldn’t stop Jermaine Drakes. Drakes, like Daevon Walker, was a lot more aggressive in the second half and showcased his smooth jump shot. Drakes shot 6-of-8 from the field, helping Landon assert jump out to a big lead.

Greenbelt ramped up their full court pressure, which brought them back into the game. Dione Wells (‘25, G) hit a couple of big shots for Greenbelt and scored a layup in transition to cut the deficit to single digits. However, Ari Hobson had a big steal and finished on the other end to ice the game for Landon with just under two minutes to play.

Landon will look to continue their hot start with a double header this Saturday. Greenbelt looks to get into the win column later tonight against the Cadets.
