St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes escapes with a win against Severn, 73-68.

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes was out running early and often. Led by Blake Neal (‘24, F) and Riley Jacobs (‘25, F), St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes was able to convert some steals into easy transition buckets. Neal and Jacobs were able to attack Severn down low with a size advantage, combining for 20 points in the first half.

Severn stayed composed after an early deficit and really settled in. Down 14-5, six minutes into the half, Junior guard Kingston Price stepped up for Severn. Price was able to penetrate the defense with ease, scoring 13 points in the first half. Daniel Growney (‘25, G) also chimed in with 11 first-half points, attacking St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes defenders and getting to the free throw line.

Severn was able to stifle St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes offensive attack, notching six steals and two blocks in the first half. However, a late steal by Riley Jacobs and a transition layup for Blake Neal just before the buzzer gave St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes the lead going into half, 35-33.

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes continued their momentum into the second-half taking an early double-digit lead. Riley Jacobs continued his presence down low with four offensive rebounds and 11 second half points.

Severn again was able to stay composed while facing a large deficit. This time it was Corey Dixon (‘27, G) who led Severn’s offensive attack. Dixon was able to get downhill and to the free-throw line. Sean Harvey also added a big and-1 to take the lead for Severn with 8:30 left to play.

As the momentum swung in favor of Severn, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes looked to Junior guard Kyan Bowman for an answer. Bowman was the go-to man down the stretch, hitting three triples to take a 60-53 lead with 5:30 left to play.

Severn’s trio of Dixon, Price, and Growney kept them in the game. But St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes played good defense down the stretch, and Blake Neal hit two big free throws to make it a three-point game with 13 seconds left. Severn wasn’t able to hit a three to tie it, and a late bucket by Riley Jacobs sealed the victory for St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes.

After dropping their first two games of the season, Severn will look to rebound against Grace Brethren this Friday. St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes will look to continue their momentum of a big opening day win against Riverdale Baptist this Friday.
