Game two of the Capitol Hoops Summer league was a back and forth contest where the Mustangs (Meade) edged out Alexandria City in the final moments of the game 53 – 52. With Meade missing three key contributors today, Alexandria jumped out to an early 16 – 4 lead. What looked to be an easy route for Alexandria City early, the mustangs responded with a 16 – 6 scoring run to cut the deficit. The teams ultimately traded baskets in the remaining minutes and the first half ended with the teams tied up at 26, despite Alexandria City’s struggles from the field and free throw line, shooting 28%, and 40%, in the first half.
The second half provided many of the nine lead changes and seven times the score was tied throughout the contest, as the two teams traded baskets frequently. Alexandria City’s shooting woes continued as they went 32% from the field and 0-9 from beyond the arc. As the mustangs only outscored Alexandria City by two in the categories of points in the paint and second chance points, as well as points off of turnovers being even between the two teams, the game came down to Alexandria City’s free throw struggles. Alexandria shot 16 for 30 from the line, a low 53%. A missed free throw by Alexandria City, gave the mustangs’ leading scorer Isaiah Matthews the opportunity to finish at the rim with under ten seconds, giving the mustangs the lead, and the win.
